Early this month we caught up with Senior Accountant Annemarie Moloney to chat about her role at PPT, about giving back to the community and her favourite things about Christmas.
Where are you originally from?
I’m born and bred in Ballarat, attended school at Loreto College and then completed Bachelor of Commerce at University of Ballarat, majoring in Accounting and Business Law.
When did you join PPT?
11 September 2000. I remember applying for the position and receiving an interview with Director Stephen Lewis – I was so excited to receive a phone call from Stephen advising me that I’d been successful in my application. I also remember the first job I worked on!
Why did you choose the accounting industry?
I really enjoyed studying accounting and economics at school; I had great teachers at Loreto, so going on to study Commerce and major in Accounting seemed to be a natural progression. No day or job is exactly the same and I enjoy that variety that each job presents.
Do you have any particular areas of expertise or interest?
Over the years I have worked with Stephen on a wide range of clients. I enjoy seeing client’s ideas and dreams become a reality and knowing that I’ve assisted them with the accounting and taxation advice side of things; I also enjoy presenting at school career evenings and talking to students. It is my way of giving back to the community and hopefully encouraging these students to follow their dreams and give them the belief that with a bit of hard work, they can achieve anything. Working with and mentoring the younger accountants and passing on my knowledge to them is another aspect I love about my job. I always remind them that we all learnt once, and we are still learning each and every day.
What’s the biggest challenge facing client right now?
Keeping up with the increase in reporting obligations, advancements in technology and choosing the software that works best for them.
When most people think about accountants they think tax, but it’s much more than that …
Definitely … We are more than a business and financial confidante and advisor; sometimes it is just being a trusted person to talk to, act as a sounding board and give advice about a particular situation; whether that be of an accounting, tax or other nature. Over the 18 years I have worked at PPT, I have been lucky to build some strong and trusted relationships with the client’s I work with.
What’s your favourite thing about Christmas?
I enjoy choosing presents for my family, seeing my nieces and nephews playing with their new toys. However, my favourite thing about Christmas is sharing the evening meal with my parents, sisters, brother in laws, nieces and nephews and any extended family. Just to sit down and enjoy each other’s company over a meal we have all contributed to makes my day so special.
What keeps you busy away from work?
Away from work I can generally be found cooking or baking – I love being in the kitchen; I can also be found spending time with my family. I love watching and participating in sport, and recently tried snowboarding which was great fun! If I want to spoil myself I will enjoy a nice glass of red wine, go for a massage or read a book – I’ve been known to start a finish a book in one sitting.
